What Is the Best Temperature To Set an AC in the Summer?

According to ENERGY STAR, a division of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 78 degrees Fahrenheit is the most cost-effective AC setting during the summer months. This recommendation applies when you’re at home.

However, your ideal summer temperature may vary based on your personal preferences, location, and the type of AC unit you have. If you’ll be home all day, set your thermostat to a comfortable temperature.

“Most people choose a temperature in the 70s during the summer months, but it really depends on your personal preference,” explains Angie Hicks, chief customer officer at Angi. “Just keep in mind that your energy bills will increase if you choose a temperature that is drastically lower than the temperature outside.”

When Sleeping
“For optimal sleep and comfort, you should turn down your thermostat at night,” says Hicks. The National Sleep Foundation recommends temperatures between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit for sleeping. Human bodies lower their temperature to prepare for sleep, and lowering your thermostat can help facilitate this process.

When You Aren’t Home
Another consideration for setting your AC temperature in the summer is whether or not you will be home. “If you are leaving your home for the day, you can set the thermostat to a higher temperature to save energy,” Hicks advises.

If you’re working outside of the home, ENERGY STAR suggests increasing the temperature setting by at least 7 degrees Fahrenheit. This principle can be applied in winter as well, with Hicks adding, “In the winter, you can set your thermostat five degrees lower for the same effect.”
